Ukrainian Commission for ensuring rights of religious organizations has been resumed

July 25, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a resolution amending the Regulation on the Commission for ensuring the rights of religious organizations and updating its membership in the light of the latest changes in particular in the government, reports the Institute for Religious Freedom according to the information of Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

The draft resolution was developed by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine in response to the request of the President of Ukraine from April 10, 2012 № 1-1/839 regarding the resumption of the above-mentioned Commission.

The purpose of the changes to Regulation and updating the Commission membership is to consider the results of the reform of central executive bodies, including those associated with the redistribution of powers among those bodies.

Ministry of Culture believes that the adoption of resolution to create conditions for resuming the work of the Commission, as well as provide more efficient and expeditious mode of issues study within its competence.

Information. The Commission for ensuring the rights of religious organizations was established by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2008 as a permanent advisory body.

There were two meetings of the Commission in 2009. Then, under the new government, there were no meetings of the Commission from 2010 until the present time.

Leaders of denominations and, in particular, the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations have repeatedly called on the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov to resume the activities of the Commission to develop and agree on a unified state policy in the sphere of freedom of religion.
